Billionaire Elon Musk threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies if Apple merges

Billionaire Elon Musk has threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies if Apple integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems.

“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the operating system level, my company’s Apple devices will be blocked. Musk emphasized in a June 10 post that this was an unacceptable security breach.

Musk even suggested that visitors to Tesla, Space Exploration Technologies Corp and other companies he runs will have to store their Apple devices in a Faraday cage upon entry.

At Apple’s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10, the tech giant unveiled “Apple Intelligence” – a set of new generative AI features – which will roll out to iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia more late this year.

This development was disclosed by Bloomberg this weekend.

One feature will allow Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, to relay user questions to ChatGPT if necessary. “Users are prompted before submitting questions to ChatGPT, along with documents or images, and Siri then provides the answer directly.”

This feature will be powered by GPT-4o – the latest version of ChatGPT from OpenAI.

But Musk said it was “just ridiculous” that Apple was “not smart enough” to create its own AI, and suggested it would be doing its customers a disservice by outsourcing privacy and security. “They sell you down the river.”

“Apple’s use of the words ‘protect your privacy’ while handing over your data to a third-party AI that they don’t understand and can’t create themselves, doesn’t protect privacy at all,” said Musk in another article

But Musk didn’t provide details about the privacy protections built into the OpenAI integration, and thus his post on X triggered the “additional context for readers” feature.

I provided a link to Apple’s press release explaining that users’ IP addresses will remain obscure and that OpenAI will not store requests.

The Apple Intelligence news did not inspire the price rise of AI-related cryptocurrencies.
