The bad news is that we’ll have to wait a long time for Will Trent’s third season.
The show is set to return mid-season, which means fans will have to wait until very Late 2024 or even early 2025 for more of their favorite special agent and his Chihuahua companion.
But the good news is that that patience will definitely pay off, thanks to the great addition to what is already one of the most talented and attractive casts on television.
Deadline reports today that Gina Rodriguez (no relation to star Ramon Rodriguez) will join the cast as a series regular.
Gina previously charmed audiences with her starring roles on Jane the Virgin and the miniseries Not Dead Yet, which was canceled in May after two seasons on ABC.
According to Deadline, Rodriguez will play Marion Alba, the confident and charismatic new assistant district attorney in Atlanta.
In classic light-hearted action style, circumstances will force the two to work together despite their initial mutual dislike.
“After her first meeting with Will goes awry, the duo are surprised to learn that they must work together to investigate a crime in the Atlanta gang world,” the report continues.
Will already has a complicated relationship with Angie (Erika Christensen), so could adding Rodriguez set up a love triangle?
It might all seem too familiar or too clichéd in other shows, but so far, Will Trent has done a good job of exceeding our expectations and delivering something different.
In a TV landscape that was not overflowing with creativity, Trent’s first two seasons were a much-needed breath of fresh air.
This is one of the reasons why the news of the series’ long hiatus was greeted with a collective sigh of anger from viewers.
But hey — if executive producers Karen Slaughter, Liz Heldens and Daniel T. Thompson are going to use this opportunity to polish up aspects of ABC’s latest show, we’re fine with that.
The addition of Gina Rodriguez is an excellent sign — and a sign that the producers and the network are doing their best in the mission to make Will Trent’s third season the series’ strongest debut yet.
What do you think, TV lovers?
